U.S. Pullout & Afganistan
Consequences on Middle East and the West
August 26 @ 11:30 am - 1:15 pm
Dr. Roy Casagranda
We are back at the Ortiz Center for in-person monthly luncheons!
After a tumultuous period of Western presence in Afghanistan, the U.S. and its allies have begun the final phase of military withdrawal from the region. While providing an in-depth analysis and overview of the U.S. foreign policy decisions over the last 20 years, Dr. Roy Casagranda will examine the consequences of the withdrawal on Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Afghanistan itself. What impact does the withdrawal from Afghanistan have on neighboring countries and our European allies? What next for the U.S. in this troubled region? What challenges await the U.S. foreign policy-makers?
Dr. Casagranda, author of The Blood Throne of Caria, is the Professor of Government at Austin Community College. Dr. Casagranda received a Ph.D. in Germanic Studies with an expertise in Middle Eastern Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin. For more than 25 years he has been teaching with an multidisciplinary approach and has established a record of research at the intersection of politics, history, economics, psychology, and philosophy. From 2010 to 2012 he wrote regularly for Merhnameh, a leading Tehran-based reformist socio-political monthly on US and Arab politics and history until the magazine was shut down by the Islamic Republic. He also wrote on Arab Spring for several other publications including the Austin American Statesman and TODO Austin. He lived in Germany, Egypt, Lebanon, Algeria and the U.K. and speaks German and Arabic.
