The Power of International Business:
A Social Marketing Imperative for Global Peace
February 15, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 1:15 pm

Dr. Abu Waheeduzzaman
Our February speaker, Dr. Waheeduzzaman, made a presentation last year at an international business conference in Bangkok, Thailand, that focused on the possibility of global peace as an outcome of the dynamic interplay of three factors: environment, institutions, and governance. Environment sets the conditions for war and peace. Without some kind of intervention, the factors and forces in the environment can elicit war. Institutions like the United Nations, its umbrella organizations, and various international organizations intervene and manage the conditions of the environment so that war does not occur. The aim of the UN is ‘to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.’ The interactive forces of the environment and institutions mediate global governance and deliver a world order.
National and global leadership plays a critical role in this process. The symbiotic relationship between the leader and the people and their dynamics determine how far the leader will be able to galvanize the spirit of a nation for war or in peacebuilding. Popular support tends to offer strong commanding leaders. Our social marketing goal would be to influence both the leaders and their followers— citizens who s/elect them. Their attitude towards global peace and the level of activism segments and positions them into four groups: uninformed majority, silent mass, peace activists, and war beneficiaries. Our marketing efforts shall be directed at each of the segments described. The speaker will elaborate them in his presentation.
