For several decades Russia’s dominant position in energy trade has been facing turmoil and uncertainty. It is now under tremendous peril simultaneously with Russia’s continuing invasion of Ukraine and with the rise of LNG over pipeline gas. What are the major implications of Russia’s potential stalemate on energy supplies of the world? How does Russia impact on the U.S. energy markets and supply chain? How vulnerable is the economy of Corpus Christi and south Texas to instability of Russia? Joseph Dresen has been researching and writing about Russia and energy economy since the early 2000s when the Wilson Center published the Kennan Institute’s Occasional Paper authored by him titled: “Russia in Asia – Asia in Russia: Energy, Economics, and Regional Relations.”

Dresen is a Senior Program Associate at The Woodrow Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute, where he is responsible for development issues, editing the Institute’s Kennan Cable series, and managing the Kennan Conversation Program that brings Kennan experts to cities across the United States. He has edited and co-edited Institute publications on issues ranging from Russian energy, human rights, and rule of law. He has been interviewed on economic and policy issues on Voice of America and Voice of Russia. Dresen has contributed numerous opinion articles for The Hill and other journals, recent among them: ‘The Unraveling of Valdimir Putin,’ and ‘Russians tune out Putin.’

Prior to working at the Wilson Center, Dresen was the Principal Administrative Assistant from 1993-95 for the International Soros Science Education Program, which directed individual grants to educators and students in the hard sciences across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Georgia. Among his publications include blog columns such as: ‘Putin will leave Russia in Ruins,’ and the article he wrote for The Huffington Post titled, ‘Interests vs. Values is the Wrong Prism for Viewing the Reset with Russia.’

Dresen earned a master’s degree from George Mason University and holds the undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
