India and the U.S. enjoy a comprehensive global strategic partnership covering almost all areas of human endeavor — driven by shared democratic values, convergence of interests on a range of issues and vibrant people-to-people contacts. In recent years, this engagement has deepened in areas like defense, national security, trade, and investment. As the two largest democratic nations of the world, India and the U.S. are further exploring opportunities in areas including energy, healthcare, and medical research to combat pandemic and other diseases, technology, innovation, startups, infrastructure, education, and manufacturing.

One of the most distinguished diplomats of India, the Honorable Aseem R. Mahajan, drawing from his immense experience dealing with world trade and business issue, will expand on these opportunities while exploring the common values that are inherent in the India-U.S. partnership. Mr. Mahajan joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1998 and is currently the Consul General of India in Houston. Prior to assuming charge for India in Houston in January 2020, he served as Ambassador/DPR of India to the World Trade Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.

In his earlier diplomatic assignments, Mr. Mahajan was the Deputy High Commissioner in the Indian Mission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and as the Consul General of India in Osaka, Japan. He had also served in Indian Missions in Tokyo and Vientiane, Laos. In his stints in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, Mr. Mahajan has served on various foreign desks handling India affairs related to United Nations, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Maldives. He also served as the Staff Officer to the Minister of State for External Affairs and as Joint Secretary coordinating the management of the annual Haj Pilgrimage from India

Mr. Mahajan has earned a Master’s degree in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Oxford, U.K., a Master’s degree in Management Studies from the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology & Science, in Pilani, India. He has also completed two annual training courses in World Trade Organization Law from the Advisory Centre on WTO Law, Geneva.

He speaks Japanese, English and Hindi and several other Indian languages. He is married with a son and daughter.
