Crisis At The Gate: Towards The U.S. Immigration Reform
What’s missing in the Conversation?
September 29 @ 11:30 am - 1:15 pm
Tran Dang, Founder & Executive Director
The Rhizome Center for Migrants, Houston & Mexico
Texas native Tran Dang, a US-educated lawyer, will address the latest and thorniest issues in the flow of migrants into the U.S. and her first-hand efforts to resolve them. Ms. Dang will focus on the right to return and on family reunification. Since 2010, particularly, Mexico has been the most impacted country and is now home to deported spouses, parents and children of U.S. citizens, deported veterans, and exiled Americans. Under the direction of Ms. Dang, the Rhizome Center, a non-profit 501(c)(3) has been providing post-deportation legal advocacy, and reintegration support to the returned and deported community in Mexico. Ms. Dang will share her experiences in the immigration reform efforts from both the U.S. and Mexico perspectives as a leading voice to bring stability between the two countries and at the U.S. southern border.
Ms. Dang is a former large law firm attorney who has represented victims of persecution in regional human rights forum and systems, United Nations High Commission on Refugees, and the UN special procedures. Before moving to Mexico where she currently resides, Tran directed a human rights office and legal aid clinic in Bangkok, Thailand. Her work in Latin America centers around the rights of asylum seekers, labor migrants and deportees. In 2018, Ms. Dang founded The Rhizome Center for Migrants, an independent and secular nonprofit organization with an on-the-ground project in Guadalajara, Jalisco, offering legal aid and advocacy support. The Rhizome Center is a leading voice today on immigration reform outside of the U.S. where she continues the current US dialogue around family unity and the right to return.
