Exponential progress in information technology has been rapidly transforming every sphere of national and personal lives of people around the world. Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), has been impacting on the conduct of international relations and influencing political and economic aspects of the U.S. and of the world. The U.S. State Department has been at the forefront of these challenges and changes and has been relying on the deep and wholistic understanding of technology and society of Landon Van Dyke. Landon is the Senior Advisor in the Office of Management, Strategy and Solutions as well as the Chief Technology Officer of the State Department.

Landon will address our luncheon audience on the status of A.I. and its impact on U.S. foreign relations. He has held a range of responsibilities and shaping the role of A.I. and machine learning and advanced information technology relating to Smart Networks, Cloud Computing, Data Management, Cybersecurity and so on. Landon, more importantly, serves as the senior advisor giving advice to agencies a wealth of information, real-time data on a broad surface area relating to defense against cyberattacks. At the State Department, Landon also serves as the advisor on energy, environment, and sustainability and as the agency’s head of analytics to better secure diplomatic facilities of the U.S. abroad. He also partners with foreign governments of allies to help them set up networks of IoT sensors for generators and building management systems.

Mr. Van Dyke previously served on the White House Council on Environmental Quality as Associate Director of International Affairs and Climate Change, coordinating foreign policy related to environmental protection, energy security, international trade, finance, and climate change.  He has also served as a senior advisor to the White House, National Security Council, the U.S. Congress, the United Nations, G7, APEC, and WTO.  Mr. Van Dyke has contributed to the crafting of several legislative initiatives and executive orders on energy and environment as well as machine learning and artificial intelligence.  Prior to a career in Washington, D.C., Mr. Van Dyke worked for several years in China as a consultant for the medical, chemical and IT industries.

Landon holds a Master degrees in Asian Economics, Business Administration and Information Systems from the George Washington University and Western Michigan University and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Central Michigan University.
