Following the death of a woman in custody of Iran’s morality police, protests calling for social freedom and political change have erupted at her funeral and hundreds have been arrested at student rallies across the country that continue today. Minors have been detained for protesting and many have died in the crackdown.

What are the implications of the domestic uprising in Iran for global politics, and for the U.S foreign policy in the region? What are the challenges for Iran’s neighbors and the European Union and its steadfast allies China and Russia? What are the complicated cultural arguments for and against the hijab as mandated for women in Iran?

Dr. Dorraj is an Iranian American scholar and Professor of Political Science at Texas Christian University. specialist in Middle East Politics and Iranian culture, he has won many teaching and research awards and speaks widely on topics relating to the rise of Iran in world politics. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and has been a Visiting Fellow at the Georgetown Center for International and Regional Studies in Doha, Qatar and a Visiting Scholar at the Fudan Institute for International Development at Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Dorraj is the author, coauthor, editor or co-editor of 7 books and more than 80 refereed articles and book chapters. In addition, he has produced more than 100 non-refereed publications such as review articles, book reviews, blogs and op-eds. References to his work and the translation of his publications have appeared in 16 languages. He has been invited to present his scholarship in national and international symposia and Conferences, including those at John Hopkins, Yale, Harvard, Queens and Toronto University (Canada), University of London and Nottingham University (Great Britain) and Beijing and Fudan University in China. He has also been an invited speaker in thinktanks and international organizations like the Hudson Institute and the World Bank.

Dorraj is a frequent commentator on global affairs in general and Middle East politics in particular. He has been featured in numerous interviews in the international, national and local media. His commentary has appeared in the New York Times, The Los Angles Times, The Economist, the Associated Press, the United Press International, the Agence France Press, the Huffington Post and The Atlantic, among others. He has been interviewed by ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS Television and the NPR, BBC, and numerous other radio stations.

He is also active in lecture circuits and has delivered many speeches to universities, thinktanks and community groups in Texas and throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, China and the Middle East. At TCU he serves as the Co-Chair of the Global Innovators Initiative and as the director of TCU Study Abroad Program in Budapest, Prague, Vienna and Dubrovnik.
