What are the most pressing challenges in U.S.-Russia relations? Are they insurmountable? Can we make concrete and tangible progress in the perceptions and misperceptions of each other? The World Affairs Council of South Texas has the unique opportunity to hear two prominent Russian journalists here in Corpus Christi! Our speakers will address how to improve Western strategies to combat disinformation campaigns, re-think interpretations of liberal democracy and search for new ways to enhance international relations and economic exchanges.
Olga Irisova is a political analyst, Co-founder, and Editor-in-Chief of Riddle, an online journal of Russian affairs. Her work focuses mostly on Russian media policy. From 2015 to 2018, she was Senior Editor at Intersection and Analyst at the Center for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding. She is also the editor and co-author of the book A Successful Failure: Russia after Crime (Warsaw 2017). In addition, she is an alumna of the Association of Schools of Political Studies of the Council of Europe. She is a Specialist in International Relations from Udmurt State University (2011) and also received her Master’s degree from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow (2013). Ms. Irisova is currently the Galina Starovoitova Fellow in Human Rights and Conflict Resolution at the Kennan Institute, The Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington D.C.
Anton Barbashin is a political analyst focusing on Russia. His latest publications focus on Russia’s political development, foreign policy and Eurasian integration. He is a regular contributor to Foreign Affairs, The American Interest, Intersection, Forbes Russia, and other publications. He is co-founder and managing editor of a Russia-focused online publication Intersection and an analyst at the Warsaw-based Center for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding.
A specialist in international relations by training, Anton Barbashin has studied Eurasian integration and its economic and ideological aspects. In 2010 he joined the Siberian Expert Center for Modernization where he worked as a Deputy Director for International Relations promoting Russian-European expert cooperation and joint projects. Since 2013, he has been a Fellow at the Center for Postindustrial Studies (Moscow). In 2013-2014 he was a contributing writer for the World Economic Journal. In 2017 he edited the collective volume Russia: three years since Crimea published by Intersection and Center for Polish-Russian Dialogue and Understanding. Mr. Barbashin is currently a George F. Kennan Expert at the Kennan Institute, The Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington D.C.

The buffet luncheon will open at 11:30 AM. Ms. Irisova and Mr. Barbashin will speak and take questions from the audience from Noon to 1:15 PM. . Member price is $30 with early registration. The price at the door is $40 for members, $50 for non-members and $35 for students and military personnel in uniform with a discount of $10 for early registration that ends at noon on Monday of this event
