The AMA is a strong supporter of expanding health insurance coverage and improving out health care system. Three of their top priorities are: 1) protecting the patient/physician relationship by insurance companies or the government; 2) providing affordable health insurance for all through a choice of plans and eliminating denials for pre-existing conditions; and 3) promoting quality, prevention and wellness initiatives.
Raj S. Ambay, MD, DDS, was elected to the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees (BOT) in June 2009. Currently a fellow in reconstructive microsurgery at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Dr. Ambay completed his residency in plastic surgery at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is a dedicated advocate for health system reform and for thoughtful implementation of health information technology.
An active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the American College of Surgeons and the Wisconsin Medical Society, Dr. Ambay has 15 years of experience in public policy and advocacy at the local, state and national levels. He is a member of the National Board of Medical Examiners® and serves on the advisory board to the Introduction to the Practice of Medicine, which utilizes a Web-based curriculum to assess resident physician competency. A past chair of the AMA Resident and Fellow Section (RFS), Dr. Ambay also served as the ASPS delegate and alternate delegate to the AMA-RFS.
Dr. Ambay brings many unique experiences to the AMABOT. In 1989 he co-founded an Internet company. After graduating from Northwestern University Dental School, Chicago, in 1993, he joined a private practice there and practiced dentistry for five years. Also in 1993, Dr. Ambay was elected as an alderman and served the constituency of a western suburb of Chicago for four years. As a member of city council, Dr. Ambay served on the Administration and Finance Committee, the Budget Subcommittee, the Subcommittee on Health Insurance, and the Planning and Development Committee.
In 1995 Dr. Ambay was credited for the conception and implementation of Illinois’ first political campaign using the Internet. He is currently the chief medical officer of an information technology company and a founding partner of an imaging research company. His community service has been recognized through numerous awards and resolutions. Dr. Ambay is a major in the U.S. Army Reserve. After Sept. 11 he was called to service through Operation NobleEagle, working alongside the 82nd Division Airborne at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. He received the Global War on Terrorism Medal in 2003.
Research in 2006 and in 2008, the prestigious Clifford C. Snyder, M.D., Past Chairman’s Award, given to the best paper at the annual meeting of the Plastic Surgery Research Council.
2002 Dr. Ambay graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. After completing three years of general surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Dr. Ambay went on to a two-year Physician-Scientist Research Fellowship through the University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center. His research has won six first-place national awards, including the AMA-RFS Best Overall
