The event topic will be "Internationalizing Corpus Christi and the South Texas Region". The event will start at 5:30pm and will be held at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi in the Harte Research Institute (HRI) room 127. This is a free event.

Arlene Jackson was appointed Director for International Education at the American Association of State Colleges and Universities  (AASCU) in December 2001. Her role at AASCU is to develop and implement national programs and activities that expand and enrich the internationalization of AASCU member institutions.

Arlene has a rich background in international education and exchange.  With over 25 years experience, she most recently is coming to AASCU after 7 years as Director of International Programs at Virginia Commonwealth University.  Arlene also worked for the Institute of International Education, Fairleigh Dickinson University and the Alvin Ailey Dance Center.  Additionally, she was a U.S. Department of State English Language Officer.  This position involved planning programs and itineraries as well as escorting foreign dignitaries in the U.S. and performing artists touring abroad under USIA and U.S. Department of State sponsorship.  She has also consulted for Academic Year in New York, and Operation Crossroads Africa.    

She has been a member of a number of international educational organizations, including: Chair of the governmental relations and advocacy committee and member of the Board of Directors for the National Council of International Visitors (NCIV), Commissioner and Chair of the Sister Cities Commission in Richmond, Virginia, and Past President of the Virginia Council of International Education (VaCIE). She currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Institute for Experiential Learning, the NAFSA  Region VIII Embassy Dialogue Executive Committee, the American Council on Education (ACE) Global Learning Advisory Group and the Academy for Educational Development (AED) PLUS program (Partnership for Learning Undergraduate Studies) Advisory Committee.

Some of her recent projects at AASCU have included the development and implementation of a comprehensive partnership program that paired AASCU institutions with Chinese universities; a 1+2+1 Student Dual Degree Program; a US based mentoring program for Senior Administrators from Chinese Universities; and a familiarization program for American senior University officials held each Fall in China. Additionally, she is coordinating the Liberia/AASCU partnership which is designed to assist the government in its planning processes to address the national reconstruction and development of the higher education sector in Liberia. 

Arlene has a BA and MA degree in International Studies from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She did additional graduate work in International Development at Columbia University’s Teacher College, and participated in the Harvard School of Education Management Seminar for University Administrators (MDP). In summer 2001, she was a Fulbright Scholar to Japan.

Additionally, she has traveled extensively to conduct workshops and give presentations on international education throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Arlene is from Teaneck, New Jersey and is currently living in Virginia.
